Beacon Health Options, a national leader in behavioral health management, today announced it is proud to once again sponsor the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) National Convention, which runs from July 6-9 in Denver. This event marks the company’s 15th consecutive year as the sponsor of the convention’s Welcome Center. The theme of the 2016 convention is “Act. Advocate. Achieve.”
The Welcome Center serves as the hub for the convention’s more than 2,000 attendees to obtain a wide range of assistance—from taking a moment’s rest from the fast-paced convention activities, to receiving help with mental health issues, such as anxiety or lost or forgotten medication. Clinical staff, including a psychiatrist, are available 24 hours a day to support individuals throughout the convention.
“For 15 years, Beacon Health Options has been a valued partner to NAMI,” said NAMI Chief Executive Officer Mary Giliberti. “Their support of the Welcome Center at our national convention helps mental health advocates take full advantage of the convention so they can return to their home states ready to ‘Act. Advocate. Achieve.’”
At this year’s convention, Beacon experts have been tapped to lead a workshop that explores “structural stigma” within the behavioral health care delivery system. This type of stigma surfaces through language, tools, operations and culture in groups that serve individuals behavioral health needs. Attendees will leave the workshop with tools and strategies to conquer their organization’s unintended stigma and to promote a recovery-focused atmosphere moving forward.
The company also has a booth, no. 206, in the convention exhibit hall that focuses on its Stamp Out Stigma (S.O.S.) campaign as well as provide information on a variety of mental health topics. Beacon helped launch the S.O.S. initiative in 2013. The initiative is now managed by the Association of Behavioral Health and Wellness, allowing other managed behavioral health organizations to support the important efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and substance use disorders.
“For a decade and a half, our company has had the privilege to serve as a national convention partner to NAMI and to help change the conversation about mental illness,” said Beacon Health Options Chief Executive Officer Tim Murphy. “We look forward to partnering with NAMI in the months and years ahead to transform the way America understands and responds as a culture to mental health.”
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, support and research, and is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community of hope.
About Stamp Out Stigma
This initiative aims to promote the eradication of stigma surrounding mental illness and substance use disorder, as stigma acts as a barrier to people seeking the care they need to recover.
