Be Thankful for a Most Important Gift: America’s Military Families

As National Military Family Month comes to a close, Beacon Health Options (Beacon), the nation’s premier behavioral health management company, wants to remind Americans to show support year-round for our military families. The United States is stronger and safer thanks to the millions of military family members who sacrifice cherished moments with their loved ones so they can serve and protect our country’s freedom.

Today, in New York City’s Times Square, Beacon will celebrate military families and the National Military Family Association (NMFA) that supports these homefront heroes. On Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the holiday season, the PR Newswire’s Times Square billboard will remind New York City shoppers of the sacrifices military families make defending our nation and that the NMFA is there to support them.

“Our military families need the support of a grateful nation each and every month,” NMFA Executive Director Joyce Wessel-Raezer said. “Americans are still enlisting in our all-volunteer military, and that means more families will know the uncertainty and worry that comes with sending a loved one into harm’s way. It is our duty to provide those families with encouragement, empowerment, and strength.”

Since September 11, 2001, military families have continued to stand as steadfast pillars of strength for their loved ones. In the last 170 months:

  • Nearly 3 million service members have deployed since 9/11, leaving millions of family members behind.
  • More than 6,800 service members have paid the ultimate price, each leaving behind a family to grieve.
  • More than 2 million children have had to cope with a deployed parent, some more than once.
  • These same children work hard to keep up their studies and make new friends, despite transferring school systems on the average of 6 – 9 times.

“So much is asked of our military families, including frequent moves and deployments, which add stress and uncertainty to everyday living,” said Kerry Mooney, President, ValueOptions Federal Services, Inc., a Beacon Health Options company. “Today and every day, we must remember to thank and support these ‘home-front heroes’ who serve our nation with selflessness and grace.”
