Beacon Health Options Names Russell C. Petrella President and CEO

BOSTON – Beacon Health Options (Beacon), a national leader in behavioral health management, announced that it has appointed Russell C. Petrella, Ph.D. as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. He follows Tim Murphy who will serve as a senior advisor to the company.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead Beacon Health Options,” said Dr. Petrella. “As a clinical psychologist for more than 40 years, I fully understand the compelling need to better serve individuals living with behavioral health conditions and help them live their lives to the fullest potential.”

In addition to being a clinician, Dr. Petrella has experience as a state official and health care executive. Joining Beacon from EmblemHealth where he was Executive Vice President, he also served as Chief Executive Officer for EmblemHealth’s strategic provider partner, AdvantageCare Physicians, one of the largest multi-specialty physician practices in New York City. Previously, Dr. Petrella held national roles as President of Magellan Behavioral Health and President of Community & State (Medicaid) for UnitedHealthcare. Earlier in his career, he served as the Director of Forensic Services and later as the Director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In those roles, he worked on various initiatives to foster rehabilitation and recovery, and to enhance community-based care.

Dr. Petrella holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Syracuse University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. He has been a fellow and president of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology and a board member and president of the American Board of Forensic Psychology.
